Historical NoteReturn to Top

In 1875 the first list of classes offered at the University of Washington was published, and classes in music were among them. By the time Washington became a state in 1889, there were classes in harmony, composition, orchestration, and practical instruction. An orchestra was organized soon after. In 1894 the catalogue was revised according to Stanford University's system of majors and electives. Nine regular departments and three special departments were established, including the Department of Music. By 1895 music students were assisting with programs at musical and social affairs and organizations, including the Seattle Ladies Musical Club.

The New York Building, erected for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, was the home of the School of Music from 1927 to 1950. During those years, practice rooms and studios were also maintained in the basement of Meany Hall. Concert series were sponsored regularly by the Associated Students of the University of Washington, the University Office of Concerts and Lectures, the Adult Education and Extension Departments, and the University Forum. Summer concerts and festivals, including Festival Opera and chamber music events, were presented annually. In June 1950 the School of Music moved into its new building in the University of Washington Quadrangle.

Irving McKay Glen served as dean of the Department of Music from 1901 to 1915. He became dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1915 but may have continued to oversee the School of Music until 1932, when Frances Dickey assumed leadership. The Department of Music was reorganized in 1935 as the School of Music, and Frances Dickey continued to serve as executive officer. Carl Paige Wood succeeded Dickey as director and held that position until his death in January 1947. Kathleen Munro was acting director from January 1947 to September 1948, when Stanley Chapple filled the position. In 1962 Demar Irvine became acting director until William Bergsma took over, serving from 1963 to 1971. John T. Moore, previously the assistant director of the School of Music, was director from 1971 to 1979. Succeeding directors were Paul M. Palombo (1979-1981), Fredric Lieberman (1981-1985), Daniel M. Neuman (1985-1995), Robin McCabe (1995-2009), Richard Karpen (2009-2019), JoAnn Taricani (2019- ).

Accession No. 04-083: University of Washington School of Music records, 1912-1991 (bulk 1950-1977)Return to Top

17.1 cubic feet including textual materials, posters, and scrapbooks (36 boxes, one oversize folder, two vertical files)
Arrangement: Arranged in three series:
  • Administrative records, 1912-1991
  • School of Music committee records, 1950-1967
  • University of Washington committee records, 1950-1967

Scope and Content: This accession documents the administration of the School of Music and its concerts. It includes substantial amounts of correspondence from directors and administrative files from the 1950s through the early 1970s. The correspondence of William Bergsma includes letters from several prominent contemporary composers. Concert programs are also extensive and cover student, faculty, and guest concerts. The bulk of the programs date from 1938 to 1977.

Of special interest are the subject files. Subject files concerning the Moldenhauer Archive document unsuccessful negotiations with the University of Washington regarding its placement. Hans Moldenhauer taught at the University of Washington from 1961 to 1964. He inaugurated the Moldenhauer Archive in 1950, and it functioned as a research collection at the University of Washington from 1961 to 1964, until his resignation. His collections focused on primary sources for the history of Western music from Gregorian chant to the present, and included a substantial amount of material relating to Anton Webern, about whom he wrote a book.

Subject files concerning the African American Jazz Program documents its development at the School of Music following the implementation of a program in Black Studies at the University of Washington in 1968. Records include correspondence and proposals dealing with the establishment of this program, and the space and faculty needed to implement it. Other material deals with efforts to secure outside funding for the program.

Additional subject files include correspondence between the School of Music and the Musicians' Association of Seattle (Local 76-493 of the American Federation of Musicians) from 1959 to 1971. This includes correspondence and legal papers regarding negotiations between the board of regents of the University of Washington and the Musicians' Association of Seattle. In 1968 litigation ensued concerning the performance rights of university students and faculty members.

Subject files concerning the Philadelphia String Quartet pertain to a lawsuit concerning the establishment of the quartet in residence at the university. The quartet was in residence at the University of Washington from 1966 to 1982. The quartet also founded the Olympic Music Festival.

Subject files about the "Pilot Program" document an experimental program for exceptional young musicians at the University of Washington from 1964 to 1966. The program was based on the premise that these performers, who had devoted many years to their craft, required exceptional admissions procedures and college curricula.

Restrictions on Access: Correspondence with David Lamb and one fund-raising file (VF 2000) contain exempt material and are restricted.

Researchers must use photocopies of materials of prominent musicians. The originals in box 36 may only be used with permission of the university archivist, Special Collections, University of Washington Libraries.

Restrictions on Use: Use of these public records is unrestricted when access is granted.
