Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

On November 16, 1961, President John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States delivered a major foreign policy speech at the University of Washington Academic Centennial Convocation, marking the climax of the University’s first century. An audience of eleven thousand, including over 850 faculty, students and special guests crowded the Hec Edmundson Pavilion as excited spectators at one of the most significant events in the University's history.

The program began with a Processional, then an Invocation by the Most Reverend Thomas A. Connolly, Archbishop of Seattle. He was followed by Washington State Governor Albert D. Rosellini reading a joint resolution of the State Senate and House of Representatives congratulating the University on its century of service. Dr. Charles E. Odegaard, University of Washington President followed with his introductory remarks, paying tribute to the driving spirit of the University’s founders and complimenting the state and federal agencies who supported the University’s continuing striving to be “nothing less than a great university.” He then went on to introduce President John F. Kennedy.

President John F. Kennedy, after paying tribute to the University and its achievements, then moved on in his speech to the present world crisis and spoke eloquently of the need for wisdom and moderation.

The photographs in the collection include President John F. Kennedy’s arrival at Boeing Field, a motorcade, his arrival at the University of Washington, preparing for and presenting his speech; and the gifts presented to him.
