Cyprian Marsh (1813-1881) was born in Niles, Cayuga County, New York, to Thomas B. Marsh and Lucy Eggleston Marsh. He married Clarrissa Davis on November 26, 1843. With his wife and family, he fled Nauvoo at the time of the 1846 exodus, but did not travel west until 1853, arriving in the valley of the Great Salt Lake in October of that year. About six weeks later, the family moved to Springville, Utah. He died in Payson, Utah. Cyprian and Clarrissa were the parents of nine children.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Cyprian Marsh papers (1829-1996), primarily offers four journal fragments, written in 3" x 6" notebooks. Together, the fragments provide an account by Marsh of his learning about the Book of Mormon in 1829, his early religious doubts, and his subsequent conversion to Mormonism. He describes his preaching and proselyting experiences in New York state and environs and mentions the names of his fellow missionaries and converts, as well as the troubles in Nauvoo and the forced exodus of the Saints. Included are itemized lists of expenditures and family genealogical material. A typescript of the main text of the journals, in addition to photocopies, has been prepared by library staff for patron use. Accompanying the journals are an 1842 certificate of Marsh's ordination as an elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints signed by Joseph Smith, Jr., Marsh's ordination as a Seventy in the LDS Church, a short history of family ownership of the journal (written by Leah Wilson Morgan), and several loose notes thought to be written by Cyprian Marsh. Photocopies of these documents have been made for patron use. ACCESS TO THE ORIGINAL JOURNALS AND THE CERTIFICATE OF ORDINATION REQUIRES APPROVAL OF THE MANUSCRIPTS DIVISION HEAD. Also stored with the fragments is a leather storage pouch.
