Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Harriet Johnston was born on November 10, 1907, to William Milton Johnston and Mabel Sleeper Johnston in Billings, Montana. She had two siblings, Margaret and Paul. She attended the University of Montana-Missoula where she belonged to Kappa Alpha Theta, majored in physical education and biology, and graduated in 1929. She married Joe Josephson and had two children, Richard and Peggy. Harriet Johnston Josephson died July 14, 2004 in Missoula, Montana.

This handwritten manuscript with photos is the record of Harriet Johnston's study of the climate, plants and animals of the parks, hills, rivers and streams around Missoula, Montana, between 1916 and 1929. Greenough Park, Waterworks Hill, Mount Sentinel, Mount Jumbo are among the specific areas studied. She also includes lists of shrubs and trees, flowers, grasses, plants, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals. The photos show representative views of the focus areas.
