Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1841, Sarah Cheney sailed for Seattle via Panama in 1862 to become an instructor in art at the brand-new University of Washington. The school had no art students, so the versatile Cheney taught music. She soon took a teaching job in Port Townsend where, in 1865, she married Captain Charles Willoughby of the United States Coast Guard Survey. In the 1870s and 1880s, Captain Willoughby served as Indian agent at Neah Bay among the Makah, and on the Quileuete and Quinault reservations. During this time, Sarah Cheney Willoughby made the pencil and crayon sketches in the collection.

Sarah Willoughby died in Port Townsend in 1913.
