Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Ronald E. Erickson was born April 20, 1933 in Peoria, Illinois. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Bradley University in 1955 and his PhD from the University of Iowa in 1959. Erickson married his wife Nancy with whom he has two children: Terrell and Christine.

Professionally, Ron Erickson worked in various research positions at the University of Texas from 1958-1961. In 1961, Erickson accepted an Assistant Professor position at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York where he taught for five years. Following his time at Canisius College, Erickson taught as an Associate Professor and Professor at the University of Montana from 1965-1998. While at the University of Montana Erickson also served as the Director of Environmental Studies from 1976-1984.

Ron Erickson began his political career as a Democratic Party member in 1998 when he successfully won a seat in the Montana State House of Representatives. He served three terms, then chose not to run in 2004. Instead he was elected countywide to a commission to study county government and also spent two years on the Missoula City-County Planning Board. He was again elected the Montana State House of Representatives in 2006. In 2008, Erickson ran for the Montana State Senate seat for Senate District 47 and won. He served as a state senator until his retirement in 2012.
