Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Marguerite O. Stevens Maloney was born in Minnesota in 1884 to Albert M. and Margaret Stevens. She had two siblings, Lucile and Lyman. Her family moved to Missoula, Montana in 1888. Her father was employed by the Northern Pacific Railroad before turning to horticultural development and finally to real estate and mining transactions. He also served as mayor of Missoula in 1901 and 1902. Marguerite attended the University of Montana-Missoula, School of Music from 1900 to 1902. She was employed as a clerk at Missoula Mercantile and later as a sales agent for Vanophone Company. She married sometime after her father’s death in 1917

The Marguerite O. Stevens photo album contains photos of family and friends; Native Americans and buffalo on the Flathead Reservation in Montana; Trout Creek, Montana; the first flying machine in Butte, Montana; and Yellowstone National Park, all from approximately 1900. In many of the photos depicting women they are dressed as cowboys, wearing pants, and posed with rifles, and often in outdoor settings rather than more formal indoor poses.
