The collection primarily focuses on Rathe's grandmother, Bessie Hanseth, a school teacher at the Upper Farm School near Siletz, circa 1920-1921. Materials include copies of images taken in 1920 and 1921 of students and Siletz tribal members. The photographs were taken by Bessie Hanseth. An article written by Rathe for the Oregonian, discusses Hanseth's involvement in education, Rathe's journey to repair a Siletz basket, and her visit to the Siletz Cultural Resource Center. The damaged basket addressed in the article is included in the collection. The basket was given to Hanseth as a gift from Minnie Lane upon her departure from the Upper Farm School. A portion of the collection contains diary entry excerpts and correspondence written by Hanseth while in Siletz and Newport.
