Mr. Staples recounts his experience working in various mines in the West in the 1920's and 1930's. Included in the account are the following: CUSTOMS of food and eating habits in a mining camp, and what the cook expected them-to eat and get out. Comments on breakfast, lunch, and dinner. How they paid for their food, whether it came out of their pay check or whether they paid for it separately. Custom of keeping animals in the mine. Also rats and mules and the use of horses for transportation outside the mine. Also information on the use of carbide lamps, procedure of entering and leaving the mine, drilling and blasting, length of working day, safety factors, hiring men to work. Miners' pastimes -picture books, cards, drinking, telling tales; Clothing in the mines --miners often strip down to long underwear because of high temperatures in mines and lack of ventilation. Folk naming and folk speech used in the mines. Superstitions in the mines, and legend of a miner named Slim who was forever trying to earn enough money to quit and go South.
