Historical NoteReturn to Top

Gerald Kechley was born in Seattle, Washington on March 18, 1919. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Music in 1946 and a Master of Arts in Music in 1950, both from the University of Washington. After teaching at the University of Michigan (1950-1951) and Centralia Junior College (1953-1954), he joined the University of Washington School of Music in 1955 as a professor of composition, a position he held for 32 years until his retirement in 1989. Over the course of his career, Kechley composed symphonies, orchestral pieces, choral pieces, operas, and church and Christmas music that came from his years at Seattle's Greek Orthodox Church and East Shore Unitarian churches. Gerald Kechley passed away in July 2021 at the age of 102. (Source: The Seattle Times, accessed 2023).
