Historical NoteReturn to Top
Camp Cooke was built in the fall of 1866 in the angle of land between the Judith and Missouri rivers in central Montana. It was built as a temporary post but remained in operation until spring of 1870. Franklin Miller was a soldier in the 13th U.S. Infantry, Fort Riley, Kansas, until 1866. He then served at Camp Cooke and was discharged on August 5, 1867.

This photocopied collection is composed of a newspaper clipping dated July 15, 1865, Franklin Miller's diary from January 1-August 5, 1867, and his 1866 identification card at Fort Riley, Kansas.
The newspaper clipping is from a Soldier's Letter, Second Colorado Calvary of Fort Riley, Kansas. It describes Indian attacks, battles, deaths, and other news, military and general.
Franklin Miller's diary begins January 1, 1867, and contains accounts of the weather, the regiment, deaths of men in the company, burials, correspondence with family and friends, company inspections, deserting soldiers, arrival of recruits, and Miller's discharge from Camp Cooke on August 5, 1867. The diary also records the passing of several steamer ships and contains two poems written by Franklin Miller.
