Vern Haugland was born May 27, 1908, to Olaus and Hannah Haugland of Litchfield, Minnesota, the eighth of eleven children. In 1913, the family moved to a ranch in Meagher County, Montana. After graduating from Gallatin High School, Haugland attended the University of Washington for two years, and finished his degree at the State University of Montana in Missoula in 1931, receiving his BA in Journalism. He then worked for two years with the Missoula Sentinel and the Daily Missoulian. In 1933, he moved to Butte, Montana, and worked as a general reporter for The Montana Standard, and in 1936 Haugland joined the Associated Press' Salt Lake City Bureau. Two years later he transferred to the Los Angeles Bureau. While there he was given the assignment of dating the ten most eligible ladies of Hollywood.

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Haugland volunteered for overseas duty. He was the first AP reporter to arrive in Brisbane, Australia. On August 7, 1942 the B26 bomber, the Martin Marauder, that Haugland was traveling in ran out of fuel, forcing him and the crew to bail out over New Guinea. Haugland was lost in the New Guinea jungle for 47 days. He wrote a book, Letter From New Guinea, about his experiences in 1943. In recognition for his heroism, General MacArthur pinned a Silver Star on Haugland on October 1, while he was still delirious from starvation and exhaustion. Haugland was the first civilian to receive the Silver Star. After recovering, he continued to cover the war in the Pacific. He returned to the United States in mid-1944 for a short stay, during which he married his long-time sweetheart, Tesson McMahon. He and Tess had two daughters, Taya and Marcia. Towards the end of the war, Haugland became an Air Correspondent with the Associated Press. This special group of correspondents were the first to arrive in Shanghai and visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the dropping of the atomic bombs. At the end of the war, he was assigned to cover the Indonesian Revolution.

He was forced to return to the United States in March of 1946 after contracting jaundice. Haugland was assigned to the AP's Washington Bureau and in 1951 took over as aviation editor. Starting in the 1950s until his retirement, he covered the NASA space program. NASA called him "the world's most experienced splashdown reporter." Haugland retired from the AP in 1973 and moved with his wife Tess to San Clemente, California. Haugland never retired from writing, though. He wrote two books on the Eagle Squadrons, a group of American men during World War II who flew for the British before America entered the war. He was finishing the third book when he died on September 15, 1984. His wife finished the book for him.

The collection contains a variety of materials collected and produced by Haugland as part of his journalism career, personal writing, and enduring interest in the military. Correspondence from his career was mostly conducted for research purposes and includes exchanges with many military personnel. Writings include manuscripts of articles, including those written for the Associated Press and his novel. There are financial materials related to his many travels for his work, along with his travel documents like passports. There are research materials related to NASA and the space program, as well as K'tut Tantri in Indonesia. There are clippings of many of his articles, some personal materials, and memorabilia. Last, there are photographs of Haugland and that he collected for his work.

Custodial History

The materials in this collection were originally donated to The University of Montana School of Journalism in 1988. Upon receipt of the materials, the School of Journalism retained all bound books for display purposes while all other materials were immediately transferred to the K. Ross Toole Archives. In 1990 the School of Journalism transferred all bound books and subsequent materials received from the donor to the archives for final processing.

Processing Note

The actions of the original processor are unknown. In 1998 the collection was rearranged and divided into ten series. Several items were placed in oversize boxes for preservation purposes. The photographs in this collection were separated during original processing. Procedures for processing the photographs were not documented. Some of the photographs may have been entered into the archives general photograph collection without attribution to the Vern Haugland Papers. In 2003, 384 unprocessed photographs were identified and re-associated with the Vern Haugland Papers.

Series I: General Correspondence , 1942-1984Return to Top

The series contains correspondence that Haugland conducted with various people throughout his career with the Associated Press and into his retirement. Haugland conducted correspondence with his research subjects, including the Eagles, an American World War II flying force fighting for Britain before America entered the war, and K'tut Tantri, and Indonesian women who Haugland made the subject for one of his manuscripts. Haugland also corresponded with Great Britain's Prince Philip in his research of the Eagles, who made him an honorary member of their group. Haugland had a great deal of correspondence with book companies who wanted Haugland to write for them. He also corresponded with military personnel, many of whom were personal friends of Haugland's because of his NASA splashdown coverage for the AP.

The series is divided in two parts. Part One: General Correspondence, is divided chronologically, and Part Two: By Subject, is divided alphabetically.

Series II: Writings , 1942-1983Return to Top

The series is divided into two subseries: Manuscripts and Datelines. The first portion is manuscripts of articles and his novel manuscripts. The second part of the series is Haugland's datelines that he wrote for the AP. Many articles that Haugland wrote dealt with the avionics industry, including airplanes, military bombers and the NASA space exploration. He also wrote many articles and two books on the experience of the Eagles during WWII. Copies of his manuscripts of Eagle Squadron and The Eagle's War are in the series. Many of his research notes are also included. Another book manuscript, Revolt in Paradise, is in the series. The datelines are mainly written about the avionics industry. Many news stories are about NASA and the different space missions, including the Apollo and Gemini flights. Other news stories on which Haugland reported were events in the Soviet Union, Vietnam, Japan, and the South Pacific.

This series of articles is divided into two subseries: Vern Haugland and Other Authors. Most of the clippings by Haugland are written on the NASA space program, and center on the Apollo missions, missile testing, and army rocket tests. People that Haugland wrote about were Charles Lindbergh, General Douglas MacArthur, and Admiral Richard Byrd. Other topics that he was interested dealt with aviation, including air travel, airports, and different types of aircrafts. The articles written by other authors that Haugland collected dealt with the NASA space program, missile testing, and satellites. Other topics included moon research, the Eagle Squadron, and the Air Force. Articles written about the Haugland family and Haugland himself are also in the series. Many of these articles are about Haugland's time in New Guinea and the book that Haugland wrote about his experiences, his war years, and copies of his obituaries after his death in 1984.

This series consists of booklets and pamphlets from many of Haugland's memberships, including the Aviation Writers Association and the National Aeronautic Association. His work journals are also included in the series, and many are written in shorthand. Haugland kept travel receipts and memorabilia from the Pacific island and Soviet Union trips that he took while working for the Associated Press. He received many certificates and citations, such as honorary memberships from the many ships that he traveled on while covering the NASA splashdowns and awards from writing associations. Correspondence with his wife, Tess, and his daughters is also in the series. There is also biographical information on Haugland in the series. A WWII based novel is also included within the series. This book deals with the war's 100 most fascinating stories. Haugland's story about his ordeal in New Guinea is included in the book.

This series contains artifacts that Haugland collected during his years with the Associated Press. Many of the artifacts relate to aviation, such as a wing remnant from the New Orleans first round-the-world flight in 1924 and a plaque commemorating the first flight by the Wright brothers in 1903. Other memorabilia centers on the NASA space program, mainly the Apollo missions. Also in the series are artifacts dedicated to Haugland on the numerous awards that he received. He received the Associated Press Medal of Honor, the Associated Press Strebig-Dobben Memorial Award, the Air Force Association Arts and Letter Award. Haugland also received an airplane propeller in 1973 signed by his friends in aviation.
