Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Daphne Eaches was born on July 21, 1921 in Pensacola, Florida. She grew up in San Francisco in a career navy family. She entered Mills College in 1940 and transferred to Bennington College in 1941. She enlisted in the Navy in 1942, and served as a communications officer in the navy’s WAVES program. After decommissioning she returned to college. In 1951 she applied to and was accepted as the first female graduate student at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, where she studied under Walter Gropius. During graduate school she met and married philosophy professor Henry G. Bugbee Jr. When Bugbee accepted a job at the University of Montana in 1957, they and their two children moved to Missoula, where Daphne Bugbee worked as an architect. Henry and Daphne later divorced. In the late 1960s and early 1970s Daphne became a full-time legislative lobbyist in Helena for the League of Women Voters of Montana. In 1971 she was one of eight delegates elected from Missoula County to the Montana Constitutional Convention. She was a founding member of the Five Valleys Land Trust, a founder of the Missoula Community Improvement Commission and served briefly in the Montana Legislature to fill a vacancy. In 1980, Daphne married Dr. Wendell Jones. Daphne Bugbee Jones died on February 18, 2012 in Missoula. She was survived by her son, Henry, and her daughter, Barbara.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Daphne Bugbee Jones collection consists primarily of two groups of papers. Series I of this collection is compiled from materials collected by H. Rafael Chacon, University of Montana Professor of Art, in the course of his research about Jones. Chacon's research was focused on her formation and work as an architect. This portion of the collection includes photographs of Jones and several of the houses she designed, plans for several houses, and clippings about her and her designs. Jones was alive during the time that Chacon wrote his article and she loaned him an autobiographical journal, photographs and other documents. Chacon copied some of the loaned materials for his research files and returned all materials to Jones. Following her death, only a few of the original documents were found at her home. Jones' family gave several additional plans and photographs to this collection.

Materials in Series II were donated to the Archives by Jones' granddaughter and are primarily focused on Jones' civic and political engagement. They include clippings, correspondence, speeches, agendas, photographs, biographical and autobiographical writing, architectural plans, and miscellany. Topics include the 1972 Montana Constitutional Convention and subsequent reunions (1970-2012); the Montana League of Women Voters and Montana Chamber of Commerce (circa 1960s-1970s); Montana State Senate (1975-1976); arts and humanities television programming in Montana (circa 1970s); environmental and city planning and beautification (circa 1960s-1970s); and the Montana Bicentennial Committee (1975). Series II also contains some personal papers (circa 1920s-2012).
