John Y. Crothers was born in 1881 in Greenfield, Ohio. He studied theology at Omaha Theological Seminary (1905-1908) and Princeton Theological Seminary (B.D. 1909, M. Th. 1927). As a Presbyterian missionary teacher in Korea he served at Taegu (1909) and Andong (1910-1941). In 1911 Crothers married Ellen McClung (1884-1966) who assisted in his missionary work. During World War II the Crothers went first to Shanghai then to the Philippines where they were imprisoned by the Japanese army until 1945. They returned to Andong, Korea in 1947 where they remained (spending 1950 in Karuizawa, Japan) until their retirement in 1951.

Crothers Papers focuses primarily on publications collected by the Crothers that related to their work in Korea and Japan as missionaries, as well as publications related to other countries in Southeast Asia. The publications include official publications of the Presbyterian Church Mission in Korea, as well as texts, periodicals and pamphlets.
