Historical NoteReturn to Top

Poet and journalist who lived in Vienna, Austria, 1892-1942.

Thekla Merwin was born in 1877 in Riga, Latvia. Her family migrated to German until she was 16 years old, then to Vienna. She came to Vienna to earn her living, writing often on the side. Then to "Neues Wienner Tageblatt" as a reporter, and later as general(?) editor. Merwin also wrote on the side for "Arbeiter Zeitung" under a pseudonum,"Vietor." She published some of her prose but did not publish her poetry. Her husband, Emil, died in 1934. Merwin continued to write under Nazi occupation from 1938-1942. (Dr. Dengler lived with her and her daughter until 1942 when Nazis forced them from their home to Thereizenstadt concentration camp. After the war, Dr. Dengler arrempted to find some record of them but, could not find one). From notes given Richard Berner by Dr. Dengler, April 24, 1968.
