Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Nancy Borgmann was born Nancy Jo Quasthoff in 1939 to Carl Quasthoff and Josephine Galley in River Grove, Illinois. She attended the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, where she specialized in linguistics and German and received a Bachelor's degree. She married Albert Borgmann, of Freiburg, Germany, in August 1963. After living in Freiburg, Germany, Champaign and Chicago, Illinois, and Honolulu, Hawaii, Nancy and her family moved to Missoula, Montana, in 1970. There she became employed at the University of Montana as the Director of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action. In 1990, she served as chair of a task force that worked with a second task force to research and propose measures to increase racial and cultural diversity at the University of Montana. She later served as chair of the resultant Diversity Advisory Council. In 2006 the university named its annual diversity award the Nancy Borgmann Diversity Award in recognition of her contributions.
Nancy and Albert Borgmann had three daughters. Nancy Borgmann died in Missoula on October 6, 2009.

This collection contains materials related to Nancy Borgmann's personal records and activities. The bulk of the collection is made up of daily planners, diaries, and correspondence between her and Albert Borgmann from 1960 to 1962 during a time before they were married when they were physically separated. These letters are in both English and German. The collection also contains correspondence between Nancy Borgmann and her parents from 1959 to 1968, correspondence with Albert during August of 1967, domestic financial records for the Borgmann household (Nancy, Albert, and children), grade reports for Nancy from elementary school through university, and running logs with daily mileage records among the day planners.

This collection has been divided into five series:
Series I: Diaries and Personal Documents, 1940-2007, 1.8 linear feet
Series II: Financial Records, 1965-1992, 0.4 linear feet
Series III: Correspondence, 1959-1968, 2.4 linear feet
Custodial History
Materials in this collection were held by Albert Borgmann until their donation to the University of Montana Archives.
Acquisition Information
This collection was donated to the Archives by Albert Borgmann in 2017.
Processing Note
During processing, letters were removed from envelopes and arranged chronologically. Materials in a three-ring binder were removed from the binder and placed in folders. Telegraphs, clippings and artwork were given protective enclosures but remain in their original positions in the materials.
Separated Materials
Personal artifacts, including a tassel, were removed from the collection during processing.
