Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Jack Hutchinson was born in Oregon City in 1928. An avid fly fisher and collector of fly fishing materials, he first became interested in the subject through his father who, during the Great Depression, was known for being able to catch enough fish to feed the entire neighborhood. Hutchinson graduated from Everett Public High School in 1946 and continued his education at Everett Community College. He eventually transferred to the University of Washington where he started in Business and Economics then switched to General Art. He graduated in 1952.

During the 1960s Hutchinson resided in Seattle where he worked in a design office. After work, he would regularly stop by Roy Patrick’s Fly shop to chat with the owner for an hour or so in order to avoid traffic on the commute home. When Roy Patrick died a few years later, Mrs. Patrick hired Jack to work in the shop where he stayed until 1989. During that time he joined the Washington Fly Fishing club in Seattle and became involved with the Federation of Fly Fishermen. The Federation held an annual Fly Fishing conclave, and Jack often arranged to send fly fishing displays from his personal collection for exhibition exhibited at the events. The Federation later hired him to work on various audio-visual fly fishing projects, which would be sent to schools and other interested individuals.

Hutchinson was always interested in supporting fly fishing organizations and eventually became active in the Evergreen Fly Fishing Club. As a member of the EFF, he would collect angler books, make flies, and gather examples of tackle. He and several other members would also volunteer for fishing events, such as the kids’ fishing day at Silver Lake, where clubs would help with funding, provide displays, and teach fly tying. Because of his expertise and interest in collecting, Hutchinson served as librarian for the Evergreen Fly Fishing Club and the Washington Fly Fishing Club for several years, helping each organization establish significant collections of fly fishing books and videos for use by members.
