Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Pediatrician and health services policy official. Robert Anderson Aldrich, 1917-1998, was professor and executive officer of pediatrics at UW School of Medicine (1956-1962), from which he took a leave to establish and direct the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (1962-1964). He returned to the UW School of Medicine (1964-1970) and then served at the University of Colorado as Vice President for Health Affairs (1970-1974) and professor of pediatrics and preventive medicine (1970-1980). He returned to the University of Washington in 1980 as clinical professor of pediatrics in the UW School of Medicine. His early research in biochemistry focussed on porphyrins. His interest broadened to urban policies for child health and development, and he worked in this area through a variety of policy and funding bodies. He collaborated with Konstantinos Doxiades at the Athens Center for Ekistics in the late 1960s and 1970s, with Jonas Salk on the MacArthur Foundation in 1979-1981, and with Kenneth Boulding on the Academy of Independent Scholars, Boulder, Colorado in 1978-1983. Died Sept 16,1998, of heart disease associated with diabetes.

Includes records relating to his activities as an advisor to the MacArthur Foundation and as a member of the World Society For Ekistics. Includes a videotaped interview by Professor Duhl of U.C. Berkeley. Bulk dates of this accession are ca. 1962-1964, 1969-ca. 1980.
