Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Kihachi Hirakawa was born in 1864 near Tokyo, Japan. In July 1890, he immigrated to Seattle and in December of the same year began work as a day laborer at Port Blakely Mill Company in Kitsap County. In 1905 he moved to Seattle, working in a secretarial position at the Japanese Baptist Church from 1905 to 1908, and then as delivery man, from 1908 to 1914. After the death of his wife in 1914, he attended William Jewell College, a Baptist college in Missouri from 1914 to1918. He then attended the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, from 1919 to 1922. In 1923, Hirakawa returned to Seattle and began work at the Tacoma Baptist Mission. In 1925, he moved back to Bainbridge Island to establish the Winslow Japanese Baptist Church.
