Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Helen Edna Buck was born in Wilton, Iowa in 1884 to Henry G. and Phoebe Parker Buck. The letter in this collection documents her move from Yakima, Washington to Rhodes, Iowa, with her parents in 1916. Buck and her family drove through Idaho, Yellowstone Park, Montana, the Dakotas, and Minnesota. She died in Marshalltown, Iowa on May 15, 1945.

This collection includes a photocopy of Helen Edna Buck's thirty-two page, handwritten letter to Clara Ballard (addressed as Dear Friend) detailing her family's move from Yakima, Washington to Rhodes, Iowa. Buck describes the weather, roads, camp sites and camping conditions, livestock and wildlife encounters, interesting geology, towns and people they encountered. The towns in Montana included Saltese, St. Regis, Huson, Missoula, Butte, Whitehall, Custer, Miles City, Glendive, and Wibaux. Their route included the road called the Camel's Hump. She also writes of going through Yellowstone Park, car trouble, and how she felt about her new home.
