The Elbert Duncan Thomas speeches (1935-1950) consist of five speeches given by Senator Thomas. Three concern his political philosophy, one is a Senate speech on the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the fifth was given at the unveiling of the Brigham Young statue created by Mahonri Young. Thomas was a Democratic senator from Utah.

Historical NoteReturn to Top

Elbert Duncan Thomas was born 17 June 1883. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1906 and then the University of California at Berkeley in 1924. He served in the Utah National Guard, was a professor of political science at the University of Utah from 1924 to 1933, and was elected to the United States Senate in 1932. He was reelected in 1938 and 1944, serving until 1950. He was involved with various committees and was appointed high commissioner of the United States trust territories of the Pacific in 1951. Thomas held that capacity until his death in 1953.

The Elbert Duncan Thomas speeches (1935-1950) were given by Elbert Thomas (1883-1953), a Democratic senator from Utah. The speeches include a radio broadcast entitled "The Constitution and Its Meaning," a reprint from the Congressional Record entitled "The Meaning of Washington's Farewell Address," remarks concerning the Civilian Conservation Corps., remarks before the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, and remarks at the unveiling of Mahonri Young's statue of Brigham Young. Some correspondence is also included.
