Historical NoteReturn to Top

The University of Washington Ethnomusicology Archives has been collecting and curating unique ethnographic music recordings for over 50 years. Its holdings of more than 15,000 items include field recordings documenting music traditions of all kinds from most areas of the world, concert recordings of visiting musicians, and films and videos of a variety of musical events, as well as several hundred musical instruments. The Archives serves the students and faculty in the UW Ethnomusicology Program, the broader university community, Pacific Northwest tribes, and an international clientele of musicians, students, and teachers.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collector, then a music teacher in Albany, Oregon, accompanied her husband, Oregon State University economist Murray Wolfson, on a one-year faculty exchange to Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria (1969-1970) where she collected local, mainly Hausa, musical instruments for use in her classroom and recorded local musicians playing these instruments. The collection also include her copies of commercial recordings she heard while in Nigeria.

Accompanying documentation includes: Reports by collector - "Instruments of the Hausa and Other Northern Nigerian Instruments"; "African Music"; and "Midterm Exam"; DVD copy of silent (8mm?) film footage shot by collector in the course of her stay in Nigeria (duration: 38:10); paper by Jack Falk written for Music 512 class, describing the Wolfson digitization project.

Original recordings made on audio cassette and later transferred by collector to analog reels; archive digital copies produced from analog reel copies by Jack Falk in the UW Ethnomusicology Archives, 2010-11; reels were returned to the collector's family.

Preparation of logsheets is in progress (contents information taken from tape box inserts and recorded announcements by collector)
