- Lee Ettelson (1898 - ?) was an editor of newspapers, including the San Francisco Examiner, and the Chicago Herald Examiner, both of which were owned by William Randolph Hearst (1863-1951). The collection (1928-1940) contains correspondence between Hearst and Ettelson, with incoming letters from Hearst conveying instruction, praise, and censure, and also newspapers annotated by Hearst.

Lee Ettelson was born in Chicago and educated at the University of Chicago. He became a newspaper editor.
He was managing editor of the New York American (1926-1928); was assistant managing editor of the San Francisco Examiner (1929-1935; was managing editor of the Chicago Herald and Examiner (1935-1936), and was editor of the San Francisco Call Bulletin (1937-1946).
William Randolph Hearst (1863-1951) was an influential newspaper publisher, and was the owner of the San Francisco Examiner, and the Chicago Herald and Examiner, among many other newspapers.
