Biographical NoteReturn to Top

James Ripley Claridge (February 16, 1833-May 22, 1896) was raised on the sea as his father was a sea captain from Eastport, Maine. Later, Claridge moved to Baltimore, Maryland where he was a junior partner in the Loud and Claridge ship handlers company with his partner Grenville Loud. The company supplied provisions to Union ships during the Civil War. James Claridge married Fanny Rebecca Whipple (February 8, 1838-March 22, 1931), and the family lived in Baltimore until the children grew up and moved to various parts of the U.S. including New Haven, Connecticut; Falls City and Omaha, Nebraska; Boulder, Colorado; Atchison, Kansas; and Seattle, Washington. The children of James and Fanny Claridge included: Frederick Hamilton Claridge (January 8, 1861-December 2, 1938) who married Helen May Castetter; Joseph Berry Claridge (July 1864-June 1935) who married Euphemy M. Forsyth; Alice Minerva Claridge (1865-1942) who married Thomas Swann Waltemeyer; Bertram Whipple Claridge (January 29, 1868-October 20, 1950) who married Estelle Dail; and Grenville Loud Claridge (1872-1910), named after James Claridge's business partner.

After James R. Claridge died in 1896, Fanny Whipple lived at her children's homes in Connecticut and in Seattle. She died in Seattle while living with her daughter, Alice Minerva Claridge Waltemeyer. Alice Waltemeyer had moved to Seattle to live with her daughter Frances Barrett Waltemeyer Ogden Macbride. Frances Macbride was very socially established in the Seattle area. She was president of the Seattle Garden Club, vice president of the Gardens Clubs of America, and board member of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and Seattle Civic Opera. Macbride was also a member and president of the Women's University Club and the Sunset Club, and a member of the Standard Grand Opera Company of Seattle and the Ladies Musical Club of the First Presbyterian Church. Frances Macbride's first husband, Harry Coe Ogden, managed the Seattle Baking Company; upon his death, Frances Macbride took over management of the company. She lived in Seattle from 1913 until she moved to Hollywood Farm in Woodinville, Washington with her second husband, Philip Douglas Macbride, in 1943.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Photographs from an album depicting Claridge and Whipple family members and friends. The portraits include extended family of James R. Claridge and Fanny Whipple Claridge. All photographs are formal portraits ranging from the late 1800s to early 1900s. The album was probably assembled by one of the children of James and Fanny Claridge. It is possible the album was given as a gift to Alice Minerva Claridge (daughter of James and Fanny Claridge) in1885 when she married Thomas Waltemeyer and left Baltimore to move west to Kansas.
