The Jabez Woodward diary [photocopy] (1857-1858) was kept while he served as a missionary for the LDS Church. Comprising only seventy-four pages, and with some notes missing, this journal is written after the profile of many other missionary journals, describing early hopes of the Mormon missionary. It begins at Geneva, Switzerland. Woodward records the prayers, disappointments, etc. of missionaries as the church membership falls away. He also records numerous stories of faith, fasting, and sacrifice. The journal ends with experiences in the Italian mission, which bring forth some reasons for its closing for over a century, from 1862 to 1966.
