George Edward Goodspeed was born 1887 in Massachusetts. In 1906 he entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study mining engineering with a geology option. He returned to M.I.T. for graduate studies when a teaching assistantship for the school year 1911-1912 was offered. He completed the year, but was then offered a summer of field work with an academic year teaching as an instructor at Corvallis by the geology department of Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University) and Oregon Bureau of Mines, which he couldn't refuse. This began, in 1912, Goodspeed's long association with the geology of Oregon's Wallowa Mountains. Goodspeed served as a First Lieutenant in the Army Reserve, Corps, of Engineers, during WWI. After the war, 1919, he was offered a teaching post at the University of Washington. He was a professor of geology at UW from 1920-1957. In 1957 he was elected to the national presidency of the America Mineralogical Society. He was a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and served as chairman of the Cordilleran Section of the Society in 1937; also a Fellow of the Mineralogical society of America, a member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, honorary life member of the Northwest Scientific Association, and a founder of Klankers, a research-social faculty club. He conducted field research up until his death in 1974.
