Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Scholar, educator, and World War II veteran Floyd Clyde Tolleson Jr. (1915-2003) was born in Stroud Linco, Oklahoma. He was the child of Ruth and Floyd Clyde Tolleson Sr. Tolleson attended the University of Washington and worked as a schoolteacher in Kirkland and Colville, Washington before enlisting in the Army in 1943. He was married to his wife Dorothy and the couple had a young daughter at the time of his enlistment. Tolleson was awarded a bronze star during World War II. After the war Tolleson attended the University of Washington again, earning an MA in 1948 and a PhD in 1955. His PhD dissertation was titled "The Relation between Leslie Stephen's Agnosticism and Voltaire's Deism." Tolleson taught courses in English and Victorian literature at the Washington State College Spokane Center (now known as Washington State University Spokane).

Materials primarily include correspondence from Floyd Clyde Tolleson to Dorothy Tolleson while he was overseas serving in the US Armed Forces during World War II. Also included is a memoir written by Tolleson in 1994 about his military service, Tolleson's military service records, a photograph, and newspaper articles. The collection also contains essays written by Tolleson about his instructors at the University of Washington while he was an undergraduate student from 1934 to 1939.
