Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The Bruce Plenk essays (1969-1970) contain two of Plenk's term papers. The first paper, submitted to a Mr. Sutcliff for a Political Science class at Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts, in 1969, is entitled The Mormon Church in Salt Lake City, Liquor and Power: A Report on Winter Study. In this paper, Plenk analyzes LDS Church control of the liquor business in Utah. Plenk also attempts to document Church control of politics, media, and business. Although the author relies heavily on secondary sources, he does chronicle the 1967 balloted issue of liquor sales in Utah.
Plenk's second paper, The Radical Labor Movement in Utah: An Introduction, was submitted for professorial comment in 1970. It traces Utah labor organizations from the first labor union of 1868 to those of World War II. This paper compiles several unpublished dissertations from the University of Utah library collections and is, as the author says, an introduction to the subject.
