Historical NoteReturn to Top
With the backing of the Oregon candidate for Governor, Walter M. Pierce, and the Oregon Ku Klux Klan, Oregon passed the Compulsory Education Law in 1922, which required children to attend public schools. The passage of this law meant religious, military, and private education was effectively outlawed, until the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Pierce v. Society of Sisters declared the law unconstitutional.
