Howard Rolland "Ron" Dix was born November 6, 1900. He graduated from the University of Montana's School of Forestry in Missoula in 1929. He lived in Montana for most of his life, working for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company in Helena, Stevensville, Annaconda, Butte, and Bonner, Montana. In 1952 he was the sales manager for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company Lumber Department in Bonner. By the early 1960s he resided in Missoula, Montana, where he served on the board of directors for Community Hospital and was a director of the Missoula Chamber of Commerce.

In 1963 the Missoula City Council appointed Dix as mayor after the sitting mayor resigned. Voters elected him to a two year term in 1965 but he did not run for the following term. He and his wife Zula moved to Woodburn, Oregon, in 1980. Dix died on January 6, 1997.
