Historical NoteReturn to Top
Elliott I. Organick was born on Feburary 25, 1925, in New York City. He began his research on computers in the 1950s and became one of the first pioneers of computer science. In 1971 he accepted the position of Professor of Computer Science at the University of Utah. While at the University he became the foremost expository writer of computer science literature having authored nineteen books on the subject. He also served as editor-in-chief of "Computing Surveys" and editor of the Education Section of CACM. He held leadership positions in the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE). His later years were spent doing research on the "Ada to Silicon" project. Organick had served as editor of Computing Surveys as well as a paper referee for several conferences and symposiums.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The Elliott Irving Organick papers (1941-1986) contain information gathered for research on the Ada to Silicon project. Also included are class materials, correspondence, conference and symposium papers, graduate student records, manuals, reviews of papers, proposals, grants, research papers, reports, and financial records. Material on the Burroughs Corp., such as correspondence, contracts, lecture material, and other material are included. Religious records and material collected while serving in leadership positions in the Association for Computing Machinery, the Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education, and other professional organizations are included as well. Copies of book manuscripts and other works are also contained in the collection.
It should be noted that only a preliminary organization of the papers has been done. Time did not allow for a thorough separation of the research papers from the correspondence, so many research papers are found among the folders containing correspondence. Likewise, correspondence is also intermixed in the folders of research papers.
