Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

John Graham, Sr., prominent Pacific Northwest architect, designed the Dexter Horton Building during 1922-1924. Graham was well known for his design of many government, education, church, and retail buildings as well as his involvement in the architecture communities of Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington. Records in the John Graham, Sr., Architect file indicate a payment of $600,000 for the building. The Dexter Horton National Bank portion of the building later became the First National Bank and eventually transitioned into municipal government offices. Graham's son, John Graham, Jr., designed Seattle's Space Needle, among many other buildings and complexes.
