Biographical NoteReturn to Top

James G. Stewart, born 1852, emigrated from Scotland to Seattle with his family in 1887. Though he is listed as a bookseller in the Scotland Census, he earned his living as a doctor in Seattle. His wife, Eliza C. Black, was born in 1856; their daughter Lizzie C. in 1880, daughter Mary M. in 1883, and daughter Elsie Helen in 1885 (Elsie may have become blind in her mid-teens). The family spent a few years in Toronto, Canada, prior to coming to Seattle. At the time of the 1900 census, however, all were living in Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood. James was a practicing doctor and Lizzie a dental student and later a practicing dentist in Seattle. James G. Stewart died in Seattle on December 16, 1918. After his death, Eliza and her daughters continued to live together in Seattle, possibly near the University of Washington, supported by Lizzie's dental practice. All three Stewart sisters remained avid sports fans throughout their lives, actively involved in Seattle baseball and University of Washington football, and following various other school and professional teams. Lizzie died in January 1969, in Seattle; her sister Elsie Helen predeceased her in May 1955, and her mother in June 1947. The date of Mary's death is unknown.

Large crowd of men and women in front of the battleship, SeattleMinnesotto
E.H. Stewart 710 15th Ave. N. Seattle Wa (Photographer)
Written on verso: U of W Students on the U.W. Minnesotto 1908. Do you remember when the [fleet] visited Seattle in 1908 and the University declared a holiday, chartered a boat and visited the battleship Minnesotto? Styles for co-eds of those days don't look much like the co-ed flappers of today and college chaps seemed to have a fondness for derby hats.
