Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Edris Roberts Fisher (1904-1972) grew up in Tacoma and was the first woman in Tacoma to obtain a pilot's license. She made her first solo flight in 1928. She married George Fisher who was the manager of the Mueller-Harkins Airport and they lived in Tacoma. She later worked for Boeing as a plant mechanic during World War II. Her daughter Georgann Fisher (1930-2015) studied photography at the Edison Technical Institute and worked at Boeing in the reproduction services department.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Two albums depicting the life of Edris Roberts, Tacoma's first woman pilot and her daughter Georgann Fisher. The first album contains records, ephemera, and photographs relating to Edris Roberts' family and ancestry. They include photographs of her childhood in Tacoma, siblings, and family, articles and photographs about her flights as the first woman pilot in Tacoma and her work as a mechanic at Boeing during World War II and after, and other things relating to her later life. The second album which was created by Georgann Fisher, includes photographs of her as a child, views of Georgann's photography classes and lab at Edison Technical School, Georgann's photography work and work by a classmate, Julian Haraki and information on her work in photography at Boeing. There was probably a third album which had already disintegrated. There is a set of photographs and news clippings which probably were also in an album. The photographs show scenes at the Mueller-Harkins Airport near Tacoma including various student airplanes, events at the field, the buildings and clippings and ephemera about flying and Edris Roberts' career.
