Historical NoteReturn to Top

Smith C. Bartrum was born in Vermont, moved with his family to Illinois, and worked for a grain and flour company in Chicago. He travelled west in 1891, and farmed in Douglas County, Oregon. He was appointed a forest ranger by Binger Hermann in 1899, and did a good deal of trail building.

"Smith C. Bartrum was a major figure in early Oregon conservation. [He] joined the reserve force as a ranger in 1899. He was not only a capable field man but highly skilled in public relations. In 1902, Bartrum was placed in charge of the newly enlarged Southern Division of the Cascade Range Forest Reserve. After the transfer he continued in the Forest Service and became the first Supervisor of the Umpqua National Forest, serving until 1920 when he retired."
