Scope and Content: Tape-recorded interview conducted by Howard Droker, May 1982, with transcript; biographical materials, will, clippings, correspondence (circa 1950-1973).
Most materials related to life and work of Solomon A. Gordon, father of Clara Rubin. S.A. Gordon (b.1886) was raised in a Hasidic home in Lithuania, received training as a machinist and plumber, and developed an affinity for socialism. Arriving in the U.S. at age 19, S.A. Gordon settled in Dallas. The Gordons came to Seattle in 1917. After working in the shipyards during World War I, S.A. Gordon worked as a streetcar conductor and bus driver for the City of Seattle for the remainder of his working life. He was an influential member of Streetcarmen's Union and fought for the hiring of black bus drivers during World War II. The Workmen's Circle is described in some detail. Mrs. Rubin concludes by discussing her career as a personnel administrator with the City of Seattle and that of her sister, Ruth Gordon Schnapp, as a structural engineer with the State of California. She describes her volunteer work in the Evening Branch of Council of Jewish Women and professional associations.
