The first installment of Sierra Club, Northwest Office, is actually the Brock Evans Papers. This Sierra Club, Northwest Office record group begins with the tenure of Doug Scott as Northwest representative of the Sierra Club. Some files have been begun by Brock Evans and continued by Doug Scott.

This installment contains documentation of primarily 5 issues: Hell's Canyon National Recreation Area legislation, Alpine Lakes Wilderness legislation, the Eastern Wilderness, ca. 1972-1974, the Endangered American Wilderness Act of 1978, and Idaho Timber Issues. Other material has been arranged by state.

Doug Scott material (Boxes 1-2) includes a number of Forest Policy Project grant proposals (1978) sent to Scott for review and testimony, and court papers regarding Hell's Canyon and the Middle Snake River. Charles W. Dolan, S.C., Puget Sound Group Conservation Chairman's files (Box 3, part of Box 4) cover various Northwest issues. The files of David Pavelchek, S.C. staff member, cover various issues and include much material on the Forest Practices Act of 1974.

General correspondence, mainly Doug Scott (Box 13-21), complement the previous accession #2678-002. Related subjects include Hell's Canyon, Endangered American Wilderness Act, and Alpine Lakes. Ken Ensroth (Box 24-30) was a research assistant whose title was Regional Clean Water Coordinator. Timber issues files (Box 1-11) relate closely to the RARE I and II planning process by the Forest Service.

Accession includes material on RARE I, late 1971 - Oct 1973, and RARE II, Jun 1977 - Jan 1979 (Roadless Area Review and Evaluation). First folder in Box 5 contains summary and final overview of RARE II. Correspondence and subject series deal with broad concerns of Sierra Club: wilderness areas in many states, land use, timber issues. There is some material on Alpine Lakes Area, Salmon River Wilderness, Mount Jefferson, St. Joe River Study, etc. Material in this accession relates to Accessions #2678-004 and #2678-005, which cover many of the same concerns and which overlap its date spans.

The records document the work of the organization on behalf of numerous environmental and political issues, including: Old Growth and Ancient Forest management and preservation; preservation of the habitats of endangered and threatened species such as the spotted owl, marbled murrelet and Hood Canal salmon; and United States Forest Service appropriations, legislation and programs.

Correspondence is essentially outgoing and signed by various staff members. It includes some press releases and incoming letters. Series spans the years 1983-1995.
