Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Tape recorded interview conducted on May 21, 1992.

Frieda tells of her parents' move to Seattle for the Jewish awareness of their children. She describes her time at the Bikur Cholim Sunday School as well as Rabbi Winograd and Al Hoffman, the composer who taught music there. She also describes her neighborhood, the people, the synagogues and the Temple De Hirsch. Frieda talks about meetings of the Jewish Junior League, founded by Rabbi Wohlgelernter, as well as meetings at the Buttnicks' home. She tells of the time Al Hoffman and Al Goodhart entertained. She describes her time with the Players Club, which was created by Sophie Rosenstein of the University of Washington Drama Department. She describes her performances at the Women's Century Club and the time when Dave Hoffman, Al's brother who was an actor, also performed. Frieda recalls her father Joseph, who learned cabinetmaking in Russia, and who built the Holy Ark at the Machzikay Hadath synagogue. She also describes her family and home.
