Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Blanche Patecky was born in 1904 in Chicago, Illinois, to Samuel and Emma Friend, and came to Portland, Oregon, as a child. She studied piano and worked as an organist. In 1930, she married Albert Patecky, who became a notable painter. The couple had a son, Kenneth. Blanche Patecky taught piano, composed music, and painted; however, none of her musical compositions were published during her lifetime. She died in 1996.

Matthew Lauser is a composer and musician from the Pacific Northwest. In 2016, he published and performed piano pieces that Blanche Patecky had composed in the 1950s, and arranged Patecky's works for the string quartet.

The collection consists of music composed by Blanche Patecky in the mid-20th century. The collection contains a book of sheet music and a compact disc. The sheet music, titled "Slavic Dances for Piano," consists of Patecky's piano compositions as well as arrangements of them for trios and quartets by musician and composer Matthew Lauser. The compositions are "Serenade in Seville"; "Dance of the Peasant Dolls"; "Around a Gypsy Campfire"; "The Cossack's Return"; and "Czardas." The compact disc contains recordings of the compositions performed by Lauser.
