Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Nils Andersson was born on 4 June 1882 to Anders Nilsson (born 2 February 1848) and Inga Maria Nilsdotter (born 10 August 1846) in Köla, Värmland, Sweden on the Kölhaget farm. He went to folk school (high school) and became a brick layer's apprentice. He left the parish of Köla on 1 March 1902 and used his savings to travel to America by ship from Oslo. Two of his sisters, Maria and Hilma Andersdotter, emigrated to the US shortly at after him. He landed in New York and directly took a naval officer commission in a New York school for language and seasmanship training. Andersson was naturalized in Seattle on 24 January 1908. He was educated as a naval commander and remained in the navy for his entire career, rising to the post of admiral and seeing active duty in WWI, and in WWII he had convoys (Operation Torch) across the Atlantic including to Africa with General Montgomery's troops. He was able to send money home to his parents in Sweden for many years. He passed away in 1957.
