Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Bartimus "Bartie" Emerson Osborn was born on December 12, 1877 in Lee, Maine. He lived in Bay View, Washington and visited Nome, Alaska during the Gold Rush around 1900. Bartie was an amateur photographer. He died at age 32 on September 11, 1910 in Seattle, Washington.

Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

Gold was discovered in Nome, Alaska in 1898. Subsequent discoveries resulted in the Nome Gold Rush which lasted until about 1908. Nome was unique in that gold could be found on several beaches where prospectors would land as they traveled north from Seattle or San Francisco. The Nome Gold Rush led to at least a 500% increase in the population of Nome and by 1900 a tent city along the beaches stretched for 30 miles.
