The Howard Backus papers is album pages containing correspondence, newspaper clippings, newsletters, photographs, and pamphlets collected by Dr. Howard Backus. The materials collected focus on the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam and the construction of its third powerhouse.
Historical NoteReturn to Top
Howard Backus was a lecturer at the Vista House in Multnomah County in Oregon, where he explained the Grand Coulee Dam to visitors. He also spent time as the superintendent for Coulee City Public Schools in Coulee City, Oregon from 1933-1938. Backus taught at the University of Oregon before moving to West Virginia, and spent the rest of his life there.
