Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Born in 1902, Jacob Almeleh immigrated to the U.S. from Rhodes with his three brothers in 1920. He had a fruit stand at Pike Place Market and became involved with the Young Hebrew Literary Club which would later become the Junior Sephardic League .

Accession No. 1864-001: Jacob Almeleh papers, 1972Return to Top
Scope and Content: Tape recorded interview (ca. 45 min) from 1972 with transcript, and xerox copy of v.2 no. 8 of Progress issue of Journal of Sephardic Studies containing Marc Angel's article about Progress.
Almeleh discusses efforts to unite the Sephardic community in the 1920s-1930s as well as the various mens' groups that merged to become the Seattle Sephardic Brotherhood. He wrote a controversial editorial piece calling for a united Sephardic Religious School which drew criticism from leaders in the community. Almeleh also discusses Nathan Kreus, the editor of "Progress"; the history of the written and spoken languages in the Jewish community; and his accomplishments as president of the Seattle Sephardic Brotherhood.
