Historical NoteReturn to Top

The National Organization for Women (NOW) was organized in 1966.The Seattle Chapter of the National Organization for Women was founded in 1970. Originally named the Seattle-King County Chapter, it was the 36th chapter of NOW chartered in the United States. The founders’ intent was to work “peacefully and within the system, through the courts, through all of the constitutional means available to effect the changes that our system has channels for.” NOW Seattle has had a great effect on the city working to create a difference for women. They have helped in organizing various committees, marches, and passing of laws such as; helping organize the Puget Sound Women’s Peace Camp, sponsoring the Washington State Equal Rights Amendment, and much more. Helen Sommers was president 1971-1972.
