Civil rights activists; state official

Gerber's career as an active civil rights worker particularly emphasized the area of housing and vocational opportunities. He worked through a number of different organizations: the Washington State Board Against Discrimination (he was appointed by Governor Rosellini and chaired the State Board from 1957 until his resignation in 1962); the Fair Employment Practices Committee, of which he was treasurer; the Washington State Committee for Human Rights; American Friends Service Committee (regarding Seattle CAMP Program); American Technion Society; National Associaton for the Advancement of Colored People (Housing Committee); National Citizens Political Action Committee; Washington Citizen's Committee for Civil Rights Legislation; Washington Independents for Wallace; and the Washington State Committee for Human Rights. He also established some organizations to deal with the problem of fair housing such as the Fair Housing Listing Service and Harmony Homes.

Sidney Gerber was a champion of civil rights in Seattle, and notably was the founder of the Fair Housing Listing Service, which worked on the issue of minority housing in the Seattle area. He chaired the Washington State Board Against Discrimination. In 1961 he was awarded the Seattle Lodge 503 B'Nai B'rith "Man of the Year" award for his civil rights leadership. He died in 1965 in a plane crash, along with passengers Wing Luke and Kay LaDue.
