Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
The A.V. Love Dry Goods and Loft Building was designed in 1925 by the Tacoma firm of Heath, Gove, and Bell. Located in the Denny Triangle neighborhood, the building was an example of Seattle’s early art deco architecture.
The building was built in 1925 by the A.V. Love Dry Goods Company and was located at 1925 Eighth Avenue. By 1935, it had been converted to a garment factory by the Olympic Garment Company. Over the next fifty years, the building housed various tenants. At the time of its sale to the United States General Service Administration (GSA) in 1998, the A.V. Love Building’s tenants included the Washington Book and Braille Library as well as various small businesses. The building was demolished as part of a redevelopment project for Seattle’s new Federal Courthouse.
The brick-and-concrete building’s exterior features included art deco stylistic elements and brick pilasters. The interior space was designed as a loft space for storage; this open space allowed for flexibility in floor plans through the years.
Recognizing the building’s historical value, the GSA hired Boyle Wagoner Architects to prepare photographic and textual documentation of the A.V. Love Dry Goods and Loft Building in 1998.

The collection contains black-and-white prints, negatives, and contact sheets depicting the A.V. Love Dry Goods and Loft Building in Seattle, Washington, prior to its demolition. Although the report is not an official HABS report, HABS standards were used as guidelines in the photographs and written report. The report was written by preservation architect Susan Boyle. Interns Jed Edeler and Karen McCaughan provided photographic and research assistance.

Report and Photocopied Images, 1998Return to Top
Included with the photographs is a report documenting the history of the A.V. Love Dry Goods and Loft Building. This report, prepared by preservation architect Susan Boyle, includes information on the history of the site, building, and architects, as well as detailed descriptions of the building's interior and exterior features. Included also are photocopies of architectural drawings, historical photographs from the 1920s, the 1998 black-and-white documentary photographs, and color photocopies of 1998 documentary photographs.

Photocopied architectural drawings include the current site plan
for the A.V. Love Building and 1925 plans for the foundation, sub-basement,
basement, four main floors, and roof of the building. Elevations and sections
are also included. The foundation plan was drawn by E.F. Sinks, structural
engineer for Heath, Gove and Bell Architects; all other drawings are by Heath,
Gove and Bell Architects.
