Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Robert Rea Esgar was born August 24, 1905 in Bozeman, Montana to Robert M. Esgar and Mary Lena (Wells) Esgar. Rea married Marjorie Briggs on September 2, 1928. Marjorie passed away in 1955. He married his second wife Christine M. Adammon in June 29, 1956. Esgar had a stepdaughter, Joan. Rea died December 12, 1966.

Rea recieved a Bachelor's of Arts in Architecture from Montana State University in 1927 and a Master's from Harvard in 1930. Esgar was a partner in Dunlap and Esgar Architects. He was a president of the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity of Bozeman, Montana. Over the course of his career, Esgar worked on projects such as the Harvard Housing units, the Cornell Medical College, war construction, the Research and Development Laboratory of the Portland Cement Association, Roseland Community Hospital,and presrving the Chicago lakefront.

The R. Rea Esgar Scrapbook was assembled by Christine Esgar to document Esgar's life and his work. The scapbook includes photographs, newspaper clippings, articles, correspondence, awards, and membership cards. Topics include the American Institute of Architects, the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the Inland Architect, the Architectural Record, the Art Institue of Chicago, and architecture in Chicago. Laid-in documents have been housed in archival folders.

Acquisition Information

The R. Rea Esgar Scrapbook was donated to Special Collections by Jane Howard of the Montana State University Foundation in October 2013. Ms. Howard recieved the scrapbook from Esgar's son-in-law Russell Barrett of Aurora, Colorado.
