Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Vernor Martin Sackett was born in Jefferson, Oregon in 1898 and graduated from Willamette University in 1922. Next to his portrait in the school yearbook, The Wallulah, is the comment "He owns a whole flock of cameras that won't eat anything but embarrassing situations. Sings a deep 'sonorous' bass, sells pictures, trades kodaks…."

Vernon died in 1965 and was survived by his wife, Mary Notson Sackett, sister of Robert Notson.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

These glass plate negatives were taken in the early 1920s and document the Willamette University campus and student life. The collection contains images of the Kimball College of Theology, Eaton Hall, and Waller Hall. Most of the images feature students and campus activities, including sorority and fraternity life and rituals and theater performances. The collection also contains snapshots of students. Based on the overlap of individuals featured, subject matter, and style of the images, the glass plate negatives were presumably taken by Vernor Martin Sackett, who graduated from Willamette University in 1922, and whose collection of over 800 personal negatives and glass plate negatives have a separate collection in the Mark O. Hatfield Library Archives.
