Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Photographs documenting trips in the Yukon and Northwest Territories. A few groups of the photographs are inscribed on verso; though the handwriting varies, the photos seems to document the same trips. Includes images of various Yukon and Northwest Territory locations: Forts Smith, Simpson, Wrigley, Norman, Good Hope and Providence; Hay River and Aklavik; views along the MacKenzie River; and two trips from Aklavik to Seattle. Photos depict Hudson's Bay and other trading posts, surveyors, Catholic missions and mission schools, steamships and scenic views. Many of the images depict Native Americans near their homes, in front of missions, and in groups with whites. Postcards include images of Alaska by Merrill and images of Jasper National Park in Alberta by F.A. Jackman.

Annotated group 1, circa 1921-1924Return to Top

102 photographs ; 3.75" x 5.75"
Arranged in original numerical order

This group of photographs documents travel largely through the Northwest Territories and the Yukon, including two journeys, in fall and mid-winter, from Aklavik to Seattle. The photographs depict settlements, trading posts, Catholic missions and mission schools as well as scenic views; many images depict Native Americans at camps, near their homes, at missions and in groups with whites. Locations depicted include Forts Smith, Simpson, Norman, and Good Hope; Hay River, Aklavik, Tent Island, Herschel Island and Fort Yukon; views along the MacKenzie River. Photos of the journeys from Aklavik to Seattle include views of Alaska, showing the Government Railway and railroad bridges. Includes images of "Eskimo murderer" Ikalupiak aboard the Distributor, on his way to a Manitoba penitentiary.

The photos have handwrittren annotations in ink on the verso, identifying locations and often describing context. The photographs are numbered 1 through 109, with 7 numbers missing.

Annotated group 2, circa 1921-1924Return to Top

21 photographs ; 2.75" x 4.5"

Subject include a Hudson's Bay trading post at Port Providence, Hay River Indians and Bishop Lucas, the Ramparts, the "Eskimo murderer" Ikalupiak, and a group of white travellers, perhaps the photographers.

Photos stamped on verso: R. McCutcheon, Fast Photo Finishing, Art Picture Framing, 10133 Jasper Ave., Edmonton, Alta.
