Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Oregon Medical Association (OMA) got its start as the Oregon State Medical Association (OSMA) in September,1874, at the insistence of local physicians who yearned for regulations on state's medical practitioners. Dr. Alred C. Kinney was elected the first President, and interestingly enough was much later also the 50th President (1924). The next leader, Dr. Rodney Glisan (1875) lobbied for a State Board of Health. His annual meeting's "entertainment" was a field trip to Dr. Hawthorne's Insane Asylum. The next big projects for OSMA was the admittance of women physicians. Sisters Angela and Ella Ford hit a trifecta, being 1) the first women to graduate in the Pacific Northwest; 2) the first from Willammette's Medical Department; and the first in OSMA (1877). Early meetings were held in a variety of places- hotels, union halls,-even fire stations. They began to focus (1882) on internal organization and on lobbying for more regulation of physicians. This at long last was established with the Medical Practice Act (1889) which created the Board of Medical Examiners (now the Oregon Medical Board).
